An Album Review: Queens of the Stone Age - Villains

Queens of the Stone Age will release their 7th album, Villains, on August 25th. I've pre-ordered the CD and planned a listening party of one. Just a dimly lit room, headphones and me. Perhaps a drink or three. I'll edit this page at a later date with my thoughts about this album. I'd love to hear your thoughts, your thoughts on my thoughts, or anything you thought I should know.

Until then...

And here we go ....

I arrived with my concert buddy around 5:15pm. The line for the show didn't look too bad. The Echelon's early entry fans held out their wrists and disappeared inside for a meet n' greet with the band. Our hopes for an early entry with dinner at Gibson's slipped away with the 15 minute wait to be seated and the back up in the kitchen. We resigned to get a bit to eat, miss the opener, and hope for the best with the ever growing line out front. Until...

"Who's jealous? Who's jealous? Who's jealous? Who's jealous of who?"

To say I'm excited about this show would be a huge understatement. Yes, I will be seeing Jack White again just a short 9 days later at the Virgin Mobile Free Fest, but seeing him in this smaller venue will be an awesome prelude. See you there?

Time Off / Catching Up

As you can see there have been zero updates since the end of last year. I posted a few shows I was planning to attend but didn't get to update the blog with set lists or thoughts about the shows. I can tell you this... they were all great! Well, maybe not all of them were "great" but I don't regret getting out and seeing them. Unfortunately, I do not have the info to update the posted shows but I can't bring myself to remove them either.

Here are a list of shows I've seen that are not posted:

Prelude to a show…

My friend and I were lucky enough to grab dinner at Gibson’s before the show, spend a few bucks and get in line for the early entry. I highly recommend doing this if you plan to grab the rail or have a favorite spot in the venue. With our game plan in hand (literally, we jotted it down on a napkin like a play by play in the game of our lives), we waited for a sign from security. I watched the opening to the steps just behind me while my friend watched up ahead. Then it happened. Security behind me shifted a trashcan blocking the stairway. I grabbed my friend’s arm and pulled her with me as I bolted for the opening. Yes! We scored the perfect spot for the show… on the floor but just above the chaos!
Four bands. All from Richmond. All worth the wait … ?

Props to the Battle of the Band winners Against Grace and Drew Martin & the Limelights who both put on engaging and energetic shows.

I'd have to say Against Grace is my favorite of the two and reminded me of cross between Something Corporate (remember them?) and Manchester Orchestra. Richmond natives Against Grace released an EP in 2008 and another in 2010. The band hopes to release a full length album early in 2012.

Drew Martin & the Limelights were a bit more pop oriented with catchy choruses and smooth vocals. Deep Blue Something (remember them? no? "Breakfast at Tiffany's"?) came to mind while listening. This band was a bit too soft for my taste but I can definitely see an appeal for radio play. Oh, Drew, please create a band web page. FaceBook, Twitter and the like are nice, but a band web page is much easier to peruse.

11/16/2011 Manchester Orchestra @ The National

Venue: The National
Location: Richmond, VA
Time: 7:00pm (doors 6:30pm)
Tickets: 16.00 (+ fees), 19.00 (+ fees) day of show
Openers: The Dear Hunter and White Denim
Headliner: Manchester Orchestra

Overall, this was a fun show. Taken in parts, the evening resembled a good, meh, good sandwich.. with beards. A lot of beards. The band members and audience members sported facial hair that would bring out the jealous streak of Grizzly Adams himself. I realize November is "Noshavember/Novembeard" but something tells me these hairy men enjoy the bush year round (innuendo not intended, but funny none the less).

10/26/2011 Portugal. The Man @ The Jefferson Theater

Venue: The Jefferson Theater
Location: Charlottesville, VA
Time: 9:00pm

Openers: Alberta Cross
Headliner: Portugal. The Man

Prelude to a Show:

Alberta Cross advertised a chance to win tickets to a show of your choice by signing up with their website for email alerts. I signed up for the 10/26 Charlottesville show at The Jefferson Theater and dutifully checked my email for the rest of the evening and through most of the next day. Nothing.

Defeated, I came home from work, made dinner and put on my pajamas (you know where this is going right?). I climbed in bed around 7:00pm to spend some time online, but wait… what’s this? An email from the management team for Alberta Cross with a time stamp of 12:30pm? How did I miss it? Is there still time? Could I really get dressed, grab gear (pen, notebook, camera, etc…) and get from Richmond to Charlottesville in time?

09/26/2011 Primus @ The National

Venue: The National
Location: Richmond, VA
Time: 8:30pm (doors 7:30)

SET LIST

Tickets: 35.00 All General Admission - Floor Standing, Balcony Seating
Openers: None - Two Sets of Primus!!

Holy Cow! What a show! Les and company did not disappoint! The crowd returned the enthusiastic energy all evening. I even heard someone jumped from the balcony but I don't have confirmation. I do however have confirmation of an ape sighting (right beside me, nice ape though) and a pig man on stage.. but that's later.

09/18/2011 The Honda Civic Tour - Farm Bureau Live at Virginia Beach

Venue: Farm Bureau Live at Virginia Beach (formerly Verizon Wireless Amphitheater)
Location: Virginia Beach, VA
Time: 7:30pm (gates 6:00pm)

Openers: Matt & Kim, My Chemical Romance
Headliner: Blink-182

Dismal day for a show but the lines outside the venue grew longer by the minute and nothing could have deterred the fans from coming in droves. Some dressed in black, some in colors and some hardly dressed at all. Oh and there was one banana… make that two bananas. The clouds dropped just enough rain to dampen everything to a miserable soggy mess and blew just enough wind to remind you how wet you’d become… and that was before the show! (badum-ch)

09/10/2011 Virgin Mobile Free Fest @ Merriweather Post Pavilion

The day started beautifully with sunshine and just a few clouds. If you've ever been to the south entrance of the Merriweather, then you know being in line before the bridge is doing pretty good. By the time of my arrival (around 10:30am) the line wound well up the hill to the parking lot and divided in two. One line extended towards the lot for the Free Ticket holders and the other for the Fan-E Pack Tickets (pronounced fanny-pack). Free is awesome but if you can swing it the Fan-E Pack gets you a t-shirt, a poster, a cup and a few other goodies all tucked in a florescent green bag. Much to the dismay of the "free" crowd, it also gets you early entry ... or at least entry before the "free" crowd.

09/07/2011 Ghostland Observatory @ The Jefferson Theater

The evening started with a dismal showing of 15 – 20 people meandering around the bar in the back of the venue. A few clung to the center stage claiming an early spot on the edge of excitement with their neon bracelets and batons cracked for optimum glow. DJ Devine tinkered with his gear above them until 9:15pm at which point he unleashed the sounds of Hendrix, Daft Punk, and The Killers to name a few. The floor crowd of about 25 warmed and dancing ensued. DJ Devine mixed and dropped beats that kept the antsy feet moving but his flow from one song to the next often lost the rhythm necessary to keep the crowd in motion. The mic distorted his attempts at conversation with the crowd and his questions about readiness and having fun were answered with a few uncollected woohoos. DJ Devine ended his 30 minute set with a few friends on stage and a thorough enjoyment of his own tunes.

By now the crowd covered the majority of the floor with plenty of room left to dance. The lights dimmed and Thomas Turner took the stage with the flag of his home state of Texas flowing behind him and encapsulated himself with the buttons, switches and wires sure shake some booties. Aaron Behrens stood with his back to the crowd while a low hum of music wafted over them. And … go!
